Maybe the problem could be related to the fact that I installed xboard in my home folder (I used --prefix=$HOME in configure). 
I will check that later, when I get home.
If the problem remains, I'll download from the git repository.

Just an idea: are you sure you properly installed it after compilation
(with "sudo make install")? The files it cannot find at run time seem
to be all in git. So it could be that they were not copied to where
XBoard expects them. Either that, or they are accidentally left out
of the release tar ball, in which case you could download directly
from the git repository.
