Well, this definitely is an error in the manual. In fact the compiled-in 
default for -polyglotDir is "", and we set that again in the master 
settings file we distribute.

It should not matter how this option is set, as long as the Polyglot binary 
is in the path. XBoard changes to the -polyglotDir before issung the 
-adapterCommand. No matter what that is,Polyglot will then change to the 
directory of the engine (given in -fd or-sd) before starting it. It could 
be that it matters for where Polyglot makes the log file, but yo would 
typiclly want that in the directory from which you started XBoard.
