Follow-up Comment #1, bug #31756 (project xboard):
This is an Xaw3d bug: sizing is not done by XBoard but by the window manager.
XBoard specifies that the top of the lower pane and the bottom of the upper
pane should be 'chained' proprotionally (XtRubber). If Xaw3d does have a funny
interpretation of 'proportionally' that eventually leads to negative size and
crashing, there is nothing we can do about it. With plain Xaw it works as it
should (according to Xaw specs).
Just do not bild XBoard with Xaw3d
