It works for me in 64-bit Ubuntu 7.10.  I have no idea what's wrong in
the Mandriva 2007 build -- sorry.

Are you sure it's xboard that is dumping core?  Maybe gnuchess or
whatever chess engine you're using is dumping core when presented with
a position that doesn't have any kings or any black pieces.  You can
use the "file" command on the core file to find out what program it's
from.
