my goal was just to simplify the code as we have to maintain two
separate backends that offer the same features and it seemed to me a bit
like a matter of taste about which one to use. I think the fewer
configure time flags we have, the better for us. But apparently people
still care about the OpenSSL backend that we should keep them both for
the time being or take into account the idea Daniel had.
