make threw an error about sys/wait.h: No such file or directory (or
somesuch).  I can't reproduce it anymore, though -- hmm.  I'll see if I
can get back to the configuration I had back then.

I presume you're using Msys/MinGW and not Msys2/MinGW64?  Maybe that
makes a difference?  This is indeed a strange issue.
