Well, the changeelog mentions that there are still unfixed issues.....
The test case I provide is just one (the simplest) possible problem with the
multivol header definitions in GNU tar. While it is possible to fix this
specific problem without breaking compatibility, it is not possible for the
other cases (e.g. a volume break inside a "speudo" file in the archive or the
sparse file hole list).
If you like to fix the general problem, it would be the best to reimplement the
star method in GNU tar. The star method uses headers that appear "out of band"
to the archiver process and thus allow to do a split at any location. The GNU
tar method uses multivolume headers that appear as "in band" data to the
archiver process and thus do not always work.
If you meanwhile implemented a new multi-volume method, please keep me informed.
