rcs bug with Solaris box that is ldap client

Rcs is version 5.7
Solaris is 2.8; the box was NIS authenticated, switched to LDAP
authenticated (the Sun provided ldapclient making conversion).
The (background) directory server is iPlanet DS 5.1. It has Posix extensions
loaded.
The user accounts have objectclass/attributes: PosixAccount, ShadowAccount,
userPassword: {crypt}password, uidnumber, uid, gidnumber, homedirectory,
loginshell, gecos, and the usual DS oc/attributes.

I'm not a powerful RCS user... I'm just an administrator trying to answer
the user's/developers needs.

There is also (reportedly) an error on check-out with lock.
