Summary: fdisk and parted tell me to report a bug if invoked as unprivileged
user
Category: parted
Group: Version < 1.6.25
Resolution: None

Initial Comment:
I invoked fdisk as a normal user and it said: <quote>

/dev/mapper/control: open failed: Permission denied
Failure to communicate with kernel device-mapper driver.
You found a bug in GNU Fdisk.
This may have been fixed in the last version of GNU Parted that you can find at:
        http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/parted/

Please check this version prior to bug reporting.

If this has not been fixed yet or if you don't know how to check, please email:
        address@hidden
or (preferably) file a bug report at:
        http://parted.alioth.debian.org/bugs/

Your report should contain the version of this release (1.2.4) along with the
error message below, the output of
        parted DEVICE unit co print unit s print
and additional information about your setup you consider important.

Unable to determine the dm type of /dev/dm-1.
Unable to open /dev/dm-1

</quote>
When I invoked the parted command it quoted at me in that message, it said
something essentially similar.

(a) they said to report a bug, so here I am;
(b) they shouldn't diagnose themselves as buggy, just because they failed, when
failing because invoked by an insufficiently privileged user - that's correct
behaviour, after all. The first line of output correctly diagnosed the problem
and told me everything I needed to know - but I initially didn't notice it,
thanks to the subsequent lines of misleading output !
