Ive done some further investigation. I asked a friend to try parted on his arm debian system (still jornada720) and it worked. He's running glibc 2.3.6, binutils 2.17 and parted 1.7.1. Im running glibc 2.5, binutils 2.17 and no parted works.
So it looks like its glibc causing these issue.

Running gdb only gave out that it seems to be a null pointer.
