Ralf,

Thanks for your reply. Does this mean the resize
doesn't work at all, or was it something peculiar to
my installation? 

To be honest, every time I tried resize, it ended up
in disaster.  e2fsck -f couldn't recover it.  I
finally gave up and used resize2fs and fdisk.
