Before trying a newer version of parted you should verify
that your disk is properly detected by the kernel.
(which version by the way...)

Inspecting "dmesg" output, "cat /proc/devices", "cat /proc/bus/usb/devices"
and on kernel-2.6 browsing "/sys/devices" should provide the information
that is needed.
