I was not aware of a mkfs.ufs for Linux. But someone seems to have ported them 
to Linux recently:

But there seems to be a larger problem with immature kernel support for UFS (I 
haven't tested this myself). I also think that there are very few users that 
use UFS for read/write on Linux.

The main usefulness is: with this patch, GNU parted would be the first tool to 
allow creation of Linux, Windows and BSD partitions on a GPT based system.
