"ext2", "ext3" refer to file system types.
"Extended partition" refers to a partition type. ext2 and ext3
partitions are never extended partitions (they are either primary
or logical). Extended partitions contain logical partitions, and
not other types of data.
Parted can resize extended partitions more freely than it can ext2/ext3.
