I was able to recover the partition. I was left a bit unnerved by the apparently wrong "guesses" made by gpart, so I didn't use it. I deleted and recreated /usr with "fdisk" instead for less risk to the other partitions, but the recovery procedure you suggested worked great. ---end--- Then after editing /etc/lilo.conf and /etc/fstab to adapt to the minor-number reordering, a few bad files were identified with rpm -Va and replaced as needed. Tue, I start over with the original parted operation, but **unmounting the partition first** this time. I'll let you know how it works out.
