This might be true, but it shouldn't be a problem.
It shouldn't have tried to shrink the partition if there was
a problem shrinking the file system. Can you check if it did
actually shrink the partition? (use "print", not "print 1")

No, since parted can't move the start of reiserfs, it would have been
kept exactly the same as what it was before.
