You can't mount it directly. (You have to gunzip first)

It makes no difference. That dd command will work.

What happens? You boot of partboot, switch to partroot when asked,
and what happens, exactly?

No need to format.

Where did you see that? You don't need to play with environment variables.
Typing "parted /dev/hda", or even "parted" will do.
After booting, instructions are given.
