Hello Andrew,

parted won't recognise one of my partitions...

version: 1.4.20 and 1.4.24 (latest packaged by Debian) - both have the same
behaviour, as far as I can see.

                            ========================
~# parted /dev/hdc

Using /dev/hdc
Information: The operating system thinks the geometry on /dev/hdc is
4866/255/63.  Therefore, cylinder 1024 ends at 8032.499M.

The partition mounts normally; fdisk tells me it's type 83.

                            ========================
# fdisk /dev/hdc

The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 4866.
There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,
and could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs
   (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK)

Command (m for help): p

Disk /dev/hdc: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 4866 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes

   Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hdc1             1      4866  39086113+  83  Linux
                            ========================

I'm putting a copy of dumpe2fs /dev/hdc1|gzip up at
http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jirib/polaris-dump.gz

Any advice, please?

Jiri
