Error: The FATs aren't big enough to describe all clusters!

Here's the output:

# parted /dev/hda

Using /dev/hda
Warning: The operating system thinks the geometry on
/dev/hda is 9732/255/63. Therefore,
cylinder 1024 ends at 8032.499M. You should check
that this matches the BIOS geometry before
using this program.
(parted) check 1
Error: The FATs aren't big enough to describe all
clusters! Each FAT is 19076 sectors. There
are 2442286 clusters, which would require each FAT to
be 19081 sectors. This is REALLY weird.

I will be happy to supply more information. Just tell
me what you would like me to provide. The basic
situation is:

/dev/hda is a Maxtor 6L080J4 (80GB IDE) drive
/dev/hda1 is a FAT32 LBA partition, using the full
80GB
It is the active partition on the boot disk. The
partition was formatted for Windows 98, and windows 98
runs fine on it. I subsequently installed Windows
2000 on the same filesystem, and I can boot both OS's
using the W2K boot loader.

Linux is installed on /dev/hdb (/ is /dev/hdb2). I
used LILO to create a boot sector for linux, then
copied it to a file and put it on C:\bootsect.lnx. I
then modified Win2k's boot.ini to include an entry for
bootsect.lnx, and that is how I boot linux from the
W2k boot manager. Linux works fine this way, but I
cannot mount the dos filesystem unders linux:

# mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/dos/
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on
/dev/hda1,
or too many mounted file systems

I have tried several workarounds for this (all
stabbing in the dark, because I do not really
understand this stuff). I tried booting linux from a
floppy instead of using the boot loader. I tried
tried forcing the geometry by providing a hda=
argument to the kernel. I tried toggling LBA mode in
LILO, and in the partition table.

Curious thing... using parted to toggle the LBA flag
did not work. It actually toggled the boot flag
instead.

A bunch more info about the drive:
