I forgot to mention two things: the version of parted that was used for
resizing the partition, and why there are ext2 partitions instead of the ext3
partitions I mentionned.
I don't know the version of parted that was used for resizing, as it sits in
the broken partition. I only know that it was on RedHat 7.2 which was updated
with up2date yesterday night (I don't know if the update contained parted). I
only know the version of parted running on the system from where I'm trying
to fix the drive (hostname "cortex", Progeny Debian): GNU Parted 1.4.6.
The reason why there are ext2 partitions is that the kernel of the machine in
which I inserted the hard disk for repair does not support ext3. I could try
to run a newer kernel that supports ext3 if required for debugging or
reparing the broken partition.
