need help to geometry

Using GNU-PARTED vers. 1.2.11 (created with rawrite) worked fine at the
beginning. 
Then in a second step (after removing and new creating partitions) I got the
message:
 "system thinks the geometry on /dev/hda is 753/255/63" 
and all commands did not work any longer.

At the beginning during the first step the geometry was "4865/255/63" (ok
for a 40GB disk ST340823A with LBA).
How can I tell  the correct geometry to the program? What happened?
Does this version not have the option for changing the language to German?
