Hespoke of ordering the books as one might speak of ordering a tonof coals. And then you expect people to give you a job! Ones got to change the system, or one changesnothing. All of them saw Gordon and grasped his status.
Youd much better stay here till youvefound a job.
It haddredged no deeper than Dell, and it even had books by Lawrence andHuxley.
In his despondent, bored moodhe did not want to make the effort of talking to her. It was just aderelicts job, a blind-alley job. Youd much better stay here till youvefound a job. Oh, I dare say its all right as a theory!
Gordon knew beforehand that there were no jobs goingbegging in the book trade. She felt that she knew him well enoughnow to take him into her confidence.
His clothes had that peculiarhardened, shiny texture of clothes that are very old and verydirty. Im sure theydgive you a job if you went and asked them.
It had dragged him downward with strange suddenness. It was that bitch HermioneSlater, presumably.
But theres a certainamount of truth in what he says.
But shewasnt going to tell Gordon anything of that. It was his religion, you mightsay, to keep out of that filthy money-world.
Hewould have perished rather than admit that Gordon was sponging onhim. Gordon plucked up hiscourage and went in. It haddredged no deeper than Dell, and it even had books by Lawrence andHuxley. We talked itover when he left the New Albion. How maddening it was, that he should let himself be pushed into thegutter by a thing like that!
It dismayed them to see what a mean, dreary little place the library was. Look here, Ravelston, I cant stay here any longer. She said good-bye and then suddenly turned to him andlaid her hand on his arm.
It was the first time she had everspoken to him like this.
Whether it was to be final he did notknow.
