It is older than GNUmake (I started it in 1984) and from my experience
it is more portable than GNU make. 

I did just start to add some non-POSIX features that allow smake to be used
to compile any software that does not depend on non-portable features
(e.g. GNU make extensions "ifdef" ....)

What does this mean? Does this mean that I would need to issue something like 
a patch in order to remove those broken files?

NOTE: even GNU make would (in case configure did not yet run) try to read
these files and stop because these files do not contain valid make syntax.

Wouldn't it more wise to rename these files and tell the now rare AmigaOS
users how to get them back?
