thanks for the rationale for the use of /rational /in this context - 
it's far beyond my horizon - as a simple user I wish only to know which 
numbers I may use with the function ly:make-moment (to define the 
property measurePosition ) - without running into problemsof any kind!

and I think one or two examples demonstrating the equivalence of 
\partial … and \override Timing.measurePosition = #(ly:make-moment -… …) 
with non trivial durations (e.g. 3 sixteenths in an upbeat in a 6/8 
rhythm) could clarify the use of both.
