Silly me was confused about Beam #'collision-voice-only in comment 8.

Setting collision-voice-only=##t does tell Beams to avoid only objects in their own voice -- pretty much turning off beam-collision-avoidance except for things like grace notes. This will be a nice option to have.

I can't help but post the Chopin preludes that are canonical examples of beam collisions. Number 1 still needs human help, but LilyPond does job herself in the the lower staff.
