And here is a patch to fix this particular problem:
   http://codereview.appspot.com/3280042

It does not change the way extenders work, but as a workaround sets the text 
of all (hidden) figures ending an extender to "0", so all end points of 
extenders will be at the same horizontal position. 

Okay to push?
