I understand the problem now. The '_' is required when using a \repeatTie else the lyric in the alternate volta is started on the first note instead of after (where the previous lyric would normally overlap). The example above gives a weird set of volta brackets, however I understand the problem and think it probably needs to be in the NR as an @knownissue only that this is kind of the same 'type' of problem we covered with \partials in the middle of a piece and that was added as an @knownissue in the NR.

Let me know if my reasoning is sound and I can come up with something.
