It is certainly because your browser does not support content
negotiation with images. In this case, you should see almost no image
on lilypond.org; e.g. do you see images in
http://lilypond.org/web/switch/howto ?
We might put .png suffixes back only in the documentation pages, as
content negotiation is not really useful there.
