I'd seen it in a Britten cello suite. I've just checked it, and the symbol is indeed there -- but it's placed under the staff (due to \voiceTwo). The tenuto line _is_ furthest from the notehead; I was just confused. :( I think we can either eliminate the -_ symbol (encouraging people to use ---. instead) or switch the order of the dot and line. Even if we keep the -_ symbol in the input language, internally* we could simply replace it with ---. (rather than keeping the "portato" symbol). * as always, I don't know much about LilyPond internals, so feel free to ignore that part if it doesn't make sense. Isn't the idea that you can use c^.^- to get the dot below the line and c^_ to get the dot above the line? /Mats Erik Sandberg wrote:On Saturday 01 January 2005 05.41, Wiz Aus wrote:What lilypond calls "portato" marks (a staccato dot and tenuto linecombined) appear to be inverted - all scores I have have the staccato dotclosest to the notehead, and the tenuto line furthest.Added as portato-direction.Portato doesn't exist in the music I use to play, so I don't know myself which direction that is correct. Do you have concrete examples of well-engraved scores that do it the other way around? Or can anyone else confirm how it should look?
