All,

Please note that we (aka someone smarter than me at my company) resolved by updating the /etc/jwhois.conf file for the whois command line tool. This file contained the outdated Whois Server value. We updated it to look for WHOIS Server as is now returned by whois.verisign-grs.com and it properly redirected. The problem being that Verisign changed the case of Whois to WHOIS and it broke jwhois package. We also had to update the Net::Whois::Raw perl module to have the updated case. Anyway, thought you guys might like to know in case others write in with similar issues plus so that you can update the conf file for future releases.

I also want to point out that I misspoke when I said that you respond with the registry whois record AND the registrar whois record. You look at both (to find out the whois server hostname) but only deliver the registrar whois record.

Thanks,

~Paul

Subject: Verisign updated whois label that broke the two step whois command in jwhois

Hello Nazim and team,

Earlier today the .com registry Verisign updated the format of their whois record.

Among other field changes, they renamed the registrar whois field from “WHOIS Server” to “Registrar Whois Server”.

Previously when one would run a whois command using jwhois you would return with both the registry whois record then you'd automatically run whois again at the registrar level and deliver that whois record too.

Now, you are only returning the registry whois record and scripts that reply on the registrar whois are breaking worldwide.

I think the solution is as simple as you updating the field you're looking for from “WHOIS Server” to “Registrar Whois Server”.

I hope I’m writing to the correct party! Please advise. I’ve also asked Verisign to reach out to any major players like yourself.

Thanks,

~Paul
