What I’d need from the Hurd to use it for work

Hi, 

I just stumbled again over the sentence “If an official release of the Hurd 
were 
made now, people would try the Hurd and be disappointed.”

SInce this sounds awfully much like “we’ll never release”, I thought about 
what I’d need from the hurd to be able to use it for a part of my work. 

For my desktops the needs are too high. But my OLPC is mostly used for 
typing/programming. So it would be a useful goal to use the Hurd there. 

To be able to use it there, the essential features are 

* Writing text and programming Python with emacs. - works. 
* Use Mercurial for my versiontracked stuff. - works. 
* Use SSH to go on my desktop and on the university machine. - should work.
* Boot Hurd on the OLPC from a USB stick. - not yet? 
* Support networking over wlan and wpa_supplicant. - not yet? Might DDE kit 
help?

As soon as I have that, I can put the Hurd on a USB stick and use it for my 
daily work. 

And that would be the point where I’d say that a release would be overdue. 
Maybe call it CLI release or something like it, stating the main working 
feature in the release name.
