I haven't delved into the details of your E-mail (both due to lack of
time and lack of immediate (non-man) knowledge), but my attention
tingled when I saw you checking the network with ping.  ping is known
to not always work from under QEMU, so you could probably use
something like wget www.google.com for testing.

Sorry, if I've just told you what you had known before I arrived in
the Hurd :-)
