there that enables file systems bigger than 2 GiB has the disadvantage

ok. does ext2 filesystems created by GNU/Linux have block size of 4096 bytes?
Your possibilities now are: a) investigate and fix this problem

I will have to check ext2fs translator, right? I will have a look (not did any hurd coding yet, but let me try, you have to start somewhere right?)
b) simply create and use file systems only with a block
size of 4096 bytes,
This is the current strategy and it works beautifully.
c) use the ext2fs translator from

file systems smaller than 2 GiB,
I'll have a look at this.
d) if you need the fatfs translator: ask
me to compile an equivavlent one or do it yourself.
It would be great if I can have one (there is one in the hurd package provided but it doesn't seem to work). fstfs has an advantage that it will work in internet cafes as well (or I will have to try some other trick like ext2 driver for windows
