As I understand it, you would write up an initial spec or proposal on
your own which the mentor would then comment on.  During the
implementation, the mentor would be available for specific questions and
will finally evaluate your work.

So I think this year's Summer of Code is probably not the best way to
introduce complete newcomers to the Hurd, as the time of the mentors is
probably quite limited.  On the other hand, you still got a few weeks to
become a Hurd insider before Summer of Code starts :)
