I've never got this, though my linker version might be different (I have
stock redhat7.1 right now).  Or rather, I have seen that error and know
what it's about, but I wouldn't expect it for the kernel.

I wonder if you may have gotten some funny sections into the link,
or perhaps somehow the linker thinks it needs to do dynamic linking setup.
Try adding -t --verbose to the ld options and see if anything looks funny.
Also try -static, which should not make a difference unless you have bogons
in the link.
