Sorry, I assumed that it was a mistake was in my code; Should I report
it to the gdb people?

Here is what gdb said:
(gdb) p _hurd_init<TAB>
_hurd_init             _hurd_init_dtable      _hurd_init_dtablesize

Me too:
(gdb) ptype _hurd_ports
type = <data variable, no debug info>

Is this a libc variable and I need debugging symbols?
