When you as upstream change the naming as you proposed we will follow
that scheme and deprecate our intermediate solution.

This is why I propose *suggesting* the distros to create a compatibility package. Some of them may choose not to implement the compatibility package at all, given that the final goal is to make the z-programs multi-format and the gz-programs gzip-only.
