Since I've never used that option I gave it a shot before posting. As
far as I can tell it only does the double to single-space thing in
a compulsory manner: otherwise you can keep your old habits and still
hit the enter key to go to the next line instead of using a space. Not
sure about the hyphens...

On the other hand, I'm not too happy about the way it handles double
spaces insofar as it still displays the two spaces on the screen and
hitting the space bar jumps to the next non-space character, skipping
the extra space... which I find a little distracting.

One advantage of using gtypist's -w flag is that it also handles lessons
generated automatically from text that follows the double-space
convention... More specifically I'm thinking of the typefortune utility
included in the gtypist package.

Thanks in any case to the OP for raising the issue. I had meant to look
into this myself for years and forcibly remove all these double spaces
for good and was too lazy to get down to it.

Shame on me... With the right tool (vim editor + a few regexes) you can
do it in a couple of minutes.
