Yep. For now it seems that all successful sticks had no ISO 9660
filesystem on the base device. Further it seems that all GRUB equipped
sticks had ISO 9660 hybrid images on them.

So there are still two suspects for the failure: GRUB and ISO 9660.
To distinguish the situation you could:

- Do your unetbootin work again. But this time install GRUB rather than
  SYSLINUX.
Or do a normal installation of some GNU/Linux onto the stick, choosing
  GRUB as boot loader.

- Try Knoppix 8.1 dd'ed flatly onto stick. It is an ISO 9660 but brings
SYSLINUX EFI boot stuff which is reported to work from USB stick (but
  not from DVD):
    http://ftp.uni-kl.de/pub/linux/knoppix-dvd/KNOPPIX_V8.1-2017-09-05-EN.iso

If one boots and the other does not, then we can outrule one suspect.

(The fact which lets me doubt about GRUB as culprit is the fact that
the firmware already lists the device in a peculiar way when it will
fail to boot. But that may also be because of Secure Boot preparations
in the ISO 9660 hybrid images.)

Have a nice day :)

Thomas
