sound weirdness

I've discovered a bug that makes absolutly no sense, and I'm worried it
may not be reproducable on other computers, but here goes. I have
integrated video and sound board i810 with the Crystal WDM Audio Codec.
Anyways I recently installed grub for my first time, using version
0.5.96.1 and I have the following for booting windows

rootnoverify (hd0,0)
makeactive
chainloader +1

Anyways if in the menu I select windows, I get no sound, BUT
if I put the selector on windows, then press 'e' to edit, then press 'b'
to boot, without changing any commands (well I can change the commands
also, but its not a requirement) it will boot WITH sound. Makes
absolutly no sense to me...
