Thanks for reporting this.  I found a sparc host running Solaris 10 with 
Oracle Solaris Studio (Sun C 5.12 SunOS_sparc 2011/11/16), and built and 
installed GNU grep 2.18 (the latest stable version), and all its tests 
passed, including the spencer1-locale test.  So it appears the bug, 
whatever it was, has been fixed.
