Just one remark on this. I think this is a nice idea, as I get sed bug reports about this at least once a month. *But*, this should be done in agreement with glibc, and _first of all_ in glibc. Making regex work differently in grep and sed is a recipe for disaster.
This is even more true with my patch to avoid at all the multibyte paths of src/dfa.c.
