Follow-up Comment #1, bug #8278 (project grep):
Yes, it should! It's very annoying to see it silently stall because of a fifo.
(Tip: do a "echo > offending_fifo" to recover.)
I came here just to submit that feature request, when I saw it's already
there. So, here's my "me too!".
