it seems like your changes introduced a bug :
when you use [NSTextView -initWithFrame:]
then [_layoutManager firstTextView] is equal to nil
it can be fixed easily by adding the following line in -buildUpTextNetwork:

   textContainer = [[NSTextContainer alloc] initWithContainerSize: aSize];
->  [textContainer setTextView: self];
   [layoutManager addTextContainer: textContainer];
   RELEASE (textContainer);

However this is more a hack than a bugfix, therefore I thought that you may 
want to have a look.
