JFTR, with Zsh 4.3 on Debian:
  $ zsh -c '(exec 3>&1; set -x; P=1 true 2>&3) 2>/dev/null'
  +zsh:1> P=1 +zsh:1> true
The problem doesn't appear with earlier versions of Zsh (tested: 
4.0.1, 4.2.0, 3.0.8).
