Perhaps update-copyright could detect the convention being used, to
placate Jim :). Failing that, pushing Jim's willful decision to
compress years into update-copyright seems like the wrong move to me :).
I've never seen anything legal that implies that ranges are ok; just the
opposite. Of course I agree with Jim that the chances of it ever
causing a problem in practice are epsilon. But still ... one way is
clearly ok, the other not.
