Indeed, the attachment got lost when I had to resend the mail, due to

And other people have some hand-written entries at the top of the file and
don't want the file to be sorted by a tool.

I would keep .cvsignore and .gitignore under revision control. gnulib-tool
is smart enough to change nothing if nothing needs to be changed; so it's
the same process as when the lead developer modifies the files by hand,
only faster.

Let's see in the next few weeks how it works out...
