I was going to suggest this with my last test, but then saw more
"interesting" errors about required macros not defuned (which look like
misparsed markers from the *_ONCE macros). I think the issue was due to
me using an older m4 version.
So, as a general warning: if somebody gets weird errors after this
change, they should first make sure to be using the latest m4, which is
ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/m4/m4-1.4.4.tar.gz at the moment.
