I looked into this matter some more, and I see that glibc has other
bugs in this area, some clearly in violation of POSIX. Unfortunately
I don't have the time to write, test, and shepherd a lot of libc-only
fixes through Ulrich's gauntlet right now. The gnulib buffer-overrun
fixes alone are already taking more free time than I have.
Can't we at least have the code work on non-glibc platforms in the
meantime? The fix is simple and obvious. I'd rather not have the
glibc problems inhibit progress elsewhere.
