emacs-21.1 looks as if could with with a K&R compiler, indeed.
Furthermore, it appears that recent gccs (since 3.0) don't build on
Sunos4 anyway, see

... and autoconf is needed for nearly every package. Whereas gettext
is optional.
So I'll convert gettext to ANSI C soon. Go, PARAMS, go...

I'll look into dropping K&R support from gnulib/lib, as long as it
makes things easier, except for the parts that are needed by emacs:
getopt, alloca, getpagesize.
